Millennials are defined as the generation born between 1980 and 2000. They are entering the accountancy profession and some are starting to climb the ranks into more senior roles. This generation grew up in a different era to the Baby Boomers or Generation X and Y. They have an unprecedented affinity with digital technology, instant access to information, and social media. Their hopes and dreams of career progression are faster and more dynamic than previous generations. They look to employers whose values, benefits and remuneration packages align with their personal and professional aspirations.

This represents a real shift in the profile of young talented individuals, and doesn’t relate well to outdated management styles or company values. If accountancy practices are to attract and retain Millennials, they must offer a new world of career and employment options, tailored to their specific preferences.

Jan Bowen-Nielsen is speaking at a breakfast event arranged by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland (ICAS) on 15 August 2017 at ICAS CA House in Edinburgh. Jan will be sharing his experience and what research can tell us about Millennials and how accountancy firms must adapt to attract, lead and retain them. He will talk about the inter-generational gaps and how senior colleagues need to mentor and support this generation to thrive and excel.
